Still the Benchmark for Noise Cancelling Headphones
The Sony WH-1000XM5 remains the reference point for noise cancelling headphones in 2026. Eight microphones and two processors deliver adaptive ANC that outperforms most competitors in real-world environments — planes, offices and busy commutes. The sound signature is warm and engaging, with excellent customisation available through the Sony Sound Connect app including a full parametric EQ.

Comfort is exceptional — the soft-fit leatherette ear pads and lightweight frame make long sessions genuinely pleasant. Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention mode and multipoint connection to two devices simultaneously are features that, once used, are hard to give up.

The one legitimate criticism is portability — unlike the XM4, the XM5 does not fold into a compact shape, making it bulkier to pack. The plastic hinges have also drawn some concern regarding long-term durability. For home and commuter use these are minor issues. For frequent travellers who pack aggressively, worth considering.
